Ida Smith was the second wife of Charles Frederick Gauss. Her parents were Charles Harmon and Catherine Bruce Lair Smith; both died in Kentucky by the time she was 6, leaving her and three sisters living with her mother's sister, Helena Smizer and her husband in rural St. Louis county. [1860 Census] In 1879, she married Charles Frederick Gauss, a widow with five daughters aged 6 - 17. Ida and Charles had no children, though she was apparently viewed with affection by her stepdaughters. According to the 1900 census Charles and Ida were living at 3661 Washington Boulevard, St. Louis, Missouri. Charles' widowed daughter, Adele Louise Bullen[1] and her daughters, Adele[2] and Mary[3], lived with them, as did Charles' brother, Louis Frederick Gauss[4]. Charles died in 1913 and Ida continued living in St. Louis, Missouri. In 1920, her household consisted of Ida, her step-daughter, Adele Gauss Bullen, widowed, and her sister, Mary A (Smith) Ferguson, also widowed. In addition, they had two servants. In 1930, Ida was living alone with the same servants. Ida died in 1932 and is buried in Bellefontaine Cemetery with her husband and several of her step-daughters and grandchildren.
