There are two lines of Gausses, one from Hannover, Germany and, by far, the largest, from Württemburg, Germany. Evidently quite early on, the Hannover branch, consisting of only a very few individuals, left Würtemburg and moved north to Hannover. It is from this "twig" that Carl Friedrich Gauss and the Gausses on this site sprang.
In the United States, the Hannover branch is represented by the two brothers, Eugene and Charles William who immigrated to the United States in the 1830's and eventually settled in Missouri. From Missouri, they spread to Louisiana, Colorado, Idaho and California for the most part. It is this line I am concerned with on this site.
The Württemburg Gausses, who are far more numerous here, came primarily to New York somewhat later, and generally moved across the northern U.S.
