Biography
Susan was born in Fort Worth, Texas, to Robert and Lois Simmons Chambless. Her father was in Brite College, Texas Christian University, studying to be a Disciples of Christ minister. He graduated a year later, at which time the family moved to Jacksonville, Florida, where two of her brothers were born. In about 1954, the family moved to Russellville, Arkansas, where Robert served the First Christian Church. The Chambless' youngest brother was born there. In 1958, the family moved to Dallas, Texas, and in 1965 to Fayetteville, Arkansas. Susan went to Texas Christian University. In 1972, she married her first husband, Gary Ottenberg. They remained in Fort Worth another year while Gary finished a Master's degree; Susan worked for the state of Texas, certifying people for food stamps. In summer, 1973, they moved to Miami, Florida, where Gary had grown up. Susan went to Florida International University, graduating in 1977 with degrees in Biology and Chemistry.
