Biography

Harriet Elizabeth Sneed was born 25 Jan 1842 in New Albany, IN. She had at least one sister. She married James Kennedy Worthington on 6 Apr 1871 in Kirkwood, MO. They had 7 children.

The 1880 census shows her in MO with James. She is born in IN, her father is born in NH and her mother is born in KY.

The 1900 census shows Harriet as head of house, living in CO. She is a farmer and the boys, James, Arthur and Jesse are with her as is her daughter Harriet. This census shows Harriet's father born in KY and her mother born in NH.

Harriet is credited with obtaining the first temperance law for the state of Missouri in 1883. She was at the time of her death, Vice President of Forest Park University, an institution founded by her sister, Mrs. Anna (Sneed) Cairns, in 1861, its President for many years. 28 Aug 1909-St Louis Daily Globe-"Woman who introduced temperance teachings in schools is dead" - this clipping is a picture with the caption as above but no other information.

Harriet died 28 Aug 1907 at the age of 65 yrs. 7 mos. 3 days.
