Biography

Charles Henry Gauss, generally known as "Henry", was born to Eugene Gauss and Henrietta Fawcett in St. Charles, Missouri. He married Charlotte Elizabeth Johns ("Lizzie"). Henry Gauss worked as a lumber merchant. The family moved to San Antonio, Texas with Lizzie's brother, Arthur Johns, to set up a new lumber business. It failed, and he returned to Missouri, living first in Sedalia, and later moving back to St. Charles. In a very real way, Henry Gauss is the founder of what I am calling the Minna Gauss Reeves collection. He was interested in genealogy, and collected a great deal of his own correspondence, shown in the huge number of letters written to him in the collection (see below).
