Biography
Lois E. Gauss was born to Charles Henry Gauss and Charlotte Elizabeth Johns while he was pursuing a business venture in Austin, Texas with his brother-in-law, Arthur C. Johns. The business venture failed, after which the Gauss family moved back to Missouri. The family was well off and Lois attended Lindenwood College. She was a member of the "Clatter Club" a group of friends so named by one of her brothers. During World War I, she married Arnold Simmons, a young engineer.
