John B. Gauss

President of the Gauss Boot and Shoe Company, St. Louis, died at his residence in that city on Wednesday, the 6th inst., of heart disease, coupled with other ailments. He was 39 years old at the time of his death, and had for several years been in delicate health, notwithstanding the fact that up to two months ago he had continued actively in business.

The deceased was born in chariton County, Mo., and at 17 or 18 years of age entered his father's (C. W. Gauss) store in St. Louis, which, as originally established, dates its existence from the year 1856. In the course of time he became partner, and, with the death of his father, assumed additional responsibilities in the management of the house. He leaves a wife and five children. The funeral took place on Friday, the 8th inst., and was large attended by members of the local boot and shoe trade. He was buried in Calvary Cemetery.

In business and social cirles no one in St. Louis had more or warmer friends than the deceased. Although for years under the shadow of death, his fortitude and cheerfulness never deserted him; by his worth and unselfishness he made men's hearts warm toward him.
