Dear Lizzie
I have not written before - not because I have not thought of you and sympathized with you in your great trouble, the greatest you & Henry have ever had[1]. I know for I have been through such a trial. I wish I could comfort you but such sorrow is beyond human comfort. Eugene was loved by all who knew him - so mild and pleasant in his manners. Perhaps the world would have dealt hardly with him. I often think of glover and feel he was not fitted to battle with the world -- and he was taken before it came to him.
I hope your health is better and that H. has recovered.
Mattie leaves us tomorrow morning on the early train she has been very unwell since she has been here -- Had the Grippe and a very severe cough -- she is better -- Your Pa has been confined to the house two days with cold. Geo. & Minne were here yesterday and I was sick all day and did not see much of them. I had one of my sick stomach spells. Shirley is still out of school with his eyes.
We will miss Mattie very much, and we have fortunately had no cold weather since she has been here. I hope to hear from you soon. May the Lord comfort you.
aff., Ma.
