Dear Miss A. D. Gauss

Your interesting letter came and I am so interested in all you tell me. Some of our record is the same other parts vary.

Things happen quite strange - just a few minutes before your letter came I was called on the phone by a Miss A. D. Johns of Buckingham Co who is visiting during the Easter season in Roanoke she /p. 2/ is the daughter of Thomas Johns who was the son of Johns Johns Jr (b) 1784 he was son of John Johns (b) 1746 - she is also looking up her D.A.R. line

Now I can not tell you where the Glover comes in-

John Johns Sr (b) 1746 was three times married. his first wife was a Miss Gorden his 2nd wife Polly Elizabeth Winston1 daughter of Judge Edmund Winston of Richmond - my G. Grandfather Edmund Winston Johns was /p. 3/ named for his grandfather Winston and tradition has it - spent most of his childhood in the home of the Winstons, that may account for his name having been left out of some of the records of his fathers family. Edmund Winston Johns was a pioneer minister in Va. and preached the doctorine [sic] of "free Kirk" and but for the connection to the Henry & Spotswood families would have been put in jail for doing it.[1] The Johns were promineant in the early church of Wales. George Dabney Winston uncle of my /p.4/ great grandfather Edmund married Doreath Henry the daughter of Patrick Henry & his 2nd wife who was the daughter of Gov Spotswood of Va. John Johnss 3rd wife was the widow of judge Manley it does not give her maiden name.-- I have never been sure who my great grandmother was our Bible gives it like this

Edmund Winston Johns
(b)May 24 - 1767
Susan Bulloock Johns
(b)June 19 - 1763
Married July 18-1787.

Now some say Susans name was Susan Bullock Jones and there /p.5/ may be a connection between this Jones family and that of your Martha Jones do you know any thing about this family of Joel Jones -- We have relatives by the name of Jones

Three members of the Va. branch served in the Revolution they were - Thomas - Mathew and William Johns all in the Buckingham militia --

I find several preachers in the Johns family and as a general thing all are very pious as most Welch people are. /p.6/ Can you give me the name of the parents of John Johns Sr born Oct 14 - 1746 and also tell me any thing you can learn about the family before that time - I have heard the family first came from Wales about 1660 but no proof has been found so far.

I can not find any other than the branches of the John Johns & Elizabeth Winston line.

I have had letters from.....

/p.7-8 missing/

/p.9/..... many of those same records list my - great grandfather others do not.

Mr Thomas Johnss of Bristol is a son of Thomas Winston Johns & a wife Miss Dudley of Lynchburg Va. Thomas Winston Johns was son of John Johns Jr. "The Va Johns family tree" was sent to some member of the family in Mississippi by an Aunt of Mr Thomas Johns, they asked for it to make a copy, it was not returned and we have never been able to trace it -- /p.10/ If you know any of the Mississippi Johns please help us locate it --

Can you get a list of the Jones family any where? I have several relics of the Johns -- the jewel box of Martha is very odd and pretty -- I also have silver spoons, candlesticks etc.

I will look for any thing I can find about the Glover family. my Mother says she knows there is /p.11/ connection but dont know just who was the Glover branch. Mother is the daughter of Martha Johns & William Clark and Martha was the child of Edmund Winston Johns William Clark was a member of the family of Va Clarks of Meriwether, Lewis & Clark connection

Thank you for writing me and I will write you again and if you learn any Jones or Johns history please let me know -- With best wishes I am

Please note that Mrs. Parrish (Willie Johns Creger) was an enthusiastic genealogist, but she was responsible for promulgating many inaccuracies, particularly regarding Edmund Winston Johns. Susan 17:17, 22 March 2008 (CDT)
