Biography

Margaret Linsay Durfee was born to Thomas Russell Durfee and Ann Glenday. Her father was a Presbyterian minister like so many of this family. He died before she was born, leaving his wife and small daughter Jane Amanda who was only three or four years old. The mother, Ann, was a Scot of hearty constitution who was a staunch advocate of education. Throughout her life she fostered education for every young person she encountered.

Margaret married Edward Payson Borden, who was probably a distant cousin of her father's. No doubt they met in Massachusetts where the families were from. They had a son, named Shirley Edward Borden in 1867, and moved to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Margaret died after a lengthy illness when Shirley was ten years old. Her sister's daughter, Mattie Johns, moved to Philadelphia, and helped raise Shirley.
