Biography
Edward Payson Borden was born 12 Feb 1836 to Richard Borden and Abby Walker Durfee in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. On 29 Sep 1863, he married Margaret Lindsay Durfee, and they had a son whom they named Edward Shirley Borden, known familiarly as Shirley. After Margaret died in 1877, her sister's daughter, Martha Johns, or "Mattie", came to Philadelphia to help care for Shirley, then 10 years old. They continued to live and travel together for a number of years, even after Shirley left home. The nature of their relationship is never hinted at. Edward Borden died 16 Dec 1916.
